Some engineers build bridges; I prefer to dive deep into the data lakes below!

I started my 'data journey' just over nine years ago, working for one of the world's largest commercial insurers. It was a great place to learn the ropes, yet I dreamed of a world outside of our on-premises SAS data warehouse. Three years later my wish was granted: corporations discovered cloud-based data engineering in Microsoft Azure.

Since then, new players emerged. There are so many tools out there that it can lead you to wonder "Is Azure right for me?". Azure has neat tools that make things easier – everyone loves Synapse, Data Factory and Power BI – but there are alternatives.

What DataFables is

By sharing my DataFables, I’ll show you the world of data engineering. Whether you’re a fellow engineer, consumer, leader or someone that’s looking to dip their toes into the subject, it’s my hope that I can provide a fable that suits you.

With each fable, I commit to transforming technical jargon into digestable stories and fun tutorials.

What DataFables is not

DataFables is not another blog that's going to tell you that data is the new oil, or that you need to build a data supermarket. Its purpose is to show you a world outside of Azure Data Engineering and inspire you to think creatively about your data platform.

Why am I doing this

From a selfish point of view, I’m doing this to keep up-to-date with the latest tools and advancements in the market. Writing about these experiences and sharing my findings enables me to understand what tools I like best and how I can use them.

From an un-selfish point of view, my hope is for this to serve as a Hitchhiker's guide to Data Engineering: no one wants to read the Encyclopaedia Galatica.

If you like how that sounds, please consider subscribing to get the latest DataFables. It's free and you'll get new emails when fresh fables are ready.
